Located on Ile de Ré in Charente-Maritime (West of France), Saint-Martin-de-Ré gets equipped with a fortified city wall, guardhouses and a citadel built by Vauban in 1681 to protect the population against a potential enemy landing. The square-shaped citadel was only accessible by one door and could receive almost 1,200 soldiers. The city was bombed in 1696 by the Anglo-Dutch flotilla.
